Before installing Datebk4, make SURE you have room to install it! You should really have at least 450k of free memory prior to installing Datebk4 as Datebk4 itself is around 400k. If you have lots of memory you CAN install Datebk4 without removing Datebk3 but this is not recommended. Normally. you will want to delete DateBk3 and DateBK3DB. NOTE THIS: if you run Datebk3 after running Datebk4, all your completed floating events will be moved to Today as Datebk3 does not recognize the new feature in Datebk4 of having completed floating events distinct from completed appt-type events, so it treats ALL floating events as incomplete. If you plan on doing this, I suggest you purge all your DONE events and archive them first, or download V-3.0u of Datebk3 which has now been posted and which should avoid this problem caused by changes in Datebk4 that were not backwards compatible with Datebk3. HANDSPRING VISOR USERS: Datebook+ has the same problem as DateBk3 with respect to floating events. Make sure you disable the float advance time (tap CANCEL in the time dialog) so dateBook+ does not run automatically. Most likely you will want to install the Stub application to mask Datebook+ (see: http://www.PimlicoSoftware.com/handspring.htm) to prevent this from happening altogether. The stub is included in the ZIP archive. This stub also prevents DateBook+ from generating duplicate alarms. If you need to remove Datebk4, and have used the beaming feature in datebk4, you should run dbScan and tap on the button: RESET DTBK BEAMING, otherwise you may not be able to receive beamed datebook records into your regular datebook application. This particular problem is due to a flaw in the Palm OS as it fails to reset an internal latch when a Soft Reset is performed. If you have a lot of problems immediately after installing V-4.0b on top of V-4.0a, please delete your dateBk4DB preference database, run DateBk4 and re-enter your preferences (and registraiton if you are a registered user). Before installing V-4.0b, it's a good idea to EXIT out of any saved view in Datebk4. ============================================================================= WARNING ABOUT USING SAVED VIEWS - READ THE MANUAL FIRST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ============================================================================= Please read the manual before reporting any problems - especially if you are not 100% sure that it is a problem - Datebk4 is complex enough that it is quite easy to overlook a preference setting, etc. Saved Views OFTEN trip people up initially, because they don't realize that all their preference settings are changed whenever a saved view is invoked. FLASH ROM. There are no issues in running DateBk4 from Flash Rom. However, I have received one or two reports of getting a 'Fatal Exception' (which of course is not fatal at all, it just means the program has to be restarted) if you put DateBk4 in RAM first, set an alarm and then move it to ROM, but I have not been able to confirm this myself yet. Datebk4 has a new registration system and your Datebk3 registration code will not work with it. Datebk4 is $24.95 for new users and $10 for registered Datebk3 users. Before the middle of June, I am expecting to post an automated upgrade system that will allow existing Datebk3 users to obtain a Datebk4 registration code at no charge. However, that will ONLY be available to users who can use the automated system without assistance from me personally. In theory, anyone who can provide their email address, HotSyncUser name and Datebk3 registration code should be able to use that system. I still intend to encourage existing datebk3 users to pay for the $10 upgrade since, as most of you know, these revenues are donated to wildlife conservation. 75 Page manual in PDF format can be downloaded from http://www.PimlicoSoftware.com/datebk4-manual.zip This requires Acrobat Reader which you can download freely from www.adobe.com if you do not have it. Right-click the link if you have difficulty getting your browser to download it. Remember that DateBk4 has a fairly extensive built-in help system (tap on the 'i' at the top right of the window title bars). Electronic Registration for Datebk4 will be handled exclusively through PalmGear: www.palmgear.com, but you can place an order most easily from the DateBk4 web page. Look to the Datebk4 web page for additional information. Problem Hacks: there are some hacks that cause problems: GadGetHack - fails to post proper refresh event and can therefore cause the split-screen menu icon not to be redrawn after gadget hacks has erased it. LogoHack - same problem - can cause date on top line not to be refreshed properly. TrekSoundsHack - early versions had same problem, latest version apparently has some new problem too. Glowhack - there some reports of redraw issues that also sound like this same problem. Left-handed users: you may wish to use the freeware program "Lefty.prc" which sets a system-wide flag that many programs use to acknowledge that the user is left-handed. Datebk4 will swap the scroll bars in the split-screen and ToDo dialogs if you run this program and check the box. However, it is likely that you may also want to use LeftHack to make other adjustments to system dialogs, the note dialog, etc. If you run LeftHack, you should DEFINITELY run Lefty as LeftHack is not sufficient to correct some of the left-handed issues. Addressbook Won't launch. If you have trouble launching the addressbook app, check that the setting at the bottom right of the preference dialog for the split-screen (menu icon on window title bar at opt left), has the 4-character sequence: addr for the built-in Rom Application. If you are using a hack that support right-to-left writing, you will not be able to use color for events. This issue may be addressed in future maintenance releases. if you are using a non-Roman language, be sure to set the non-Roman Chars option in the second weekly view! JAPANESE/JOS IS NOT SUPPORTED IN THIS RELEASE. I have not addressed all Japanese language issues in Datebk4, so Japanese users should continue to use Japanese version of Datebk3 and wait for a later maintenance release of DateBk4 Versions of DateBk4 in languages other than English will arrive later this year, with German and Japanese being the primary focus. There are no official release dates for these versions. Other Files: dbScan.prc is a utility program to make sure that your DateBook database has no corrupt records. dbSetup.prc sets up the icons and Timezones for you lefty.prc run this in addition to left hack to make screen adjustments for left-handed use dtbkplusstub.prc This is for use on Handspring Visor ONLY. Use this tiny app to mask the Datebook+ application. This prevents alarms and prevents the problem of advancing completed floating events Cheers! C. E. Steuart Dewar (aka CESD), Pimlico Software, Inc. ========================================== Last Minute documentation Updates: * In V-4.0b if someone is beaming you an event from the regular Datebook application, you may need to exit Datebk4 before they beam the event for it to be received properly (this appears to be an OS-dependent problem). This issue should be addressed in a subsequent maintenance release. You CAN beam events or categories to people who do not have DateBk4, however.
